Information Design

Throughout my Information Design course I learned about the history and principles of Information Design. For my final project I was tasked with visually representing at least three data sets into one infographic. I chose datasets on COVID - 19 exposure rates for White and Black citizens in order to articulate pandemic health disparities in the United States.

This data accounts for recorded cases from March 2020 - March 2021.

PROCESS

01 DATA COLLECTION

Research competitors in the industry to identify standard practices and points of differentiation

02 LAYOUT

Create a design system that pulls from their existing product for both light and dark mode

03 REFINE

Sketch logo ideas and wireframes with new design system using paired down copy from website

PROCESS BREAKDOWN

dataset collection

Focussing on COVID - 19 information seemed to be the perfect topic for this assignment because of how much data was available to the public. At first, I was gathering the total number of cases in each state and inputting the numbers in an excel sheet with no direction on what kind of narrative this project would have. While I was searching for my next dataset I began to wonder what caused different states to have extremely different COVID exposures. This is when I chose to focus on the number of White and Black cases in each state to calculate the percent likelihood of contracting COVID - 19.

Layout Design

Once all of the data was collected and the percent chance was calculated for each race, I was able to think about the visual display of information. I wanted the design to stem from something symmetrical to emphasize the disparities among White and Black percentages - both within each state and throughout America as a whole. I experimented with different typefaces as well as colors but ultimately decided to add political undertones with a cyan and magenta as it added a different tone to the narrative.
